Chapter Sixteen

Robbie watched Kenzie fall into what he hoped was a dreamless sleep. As the dark of night gave way to dawn, he began to drift off, smiling to himself. His last thoughts were, she’s my girl, but why hasn’t she said anything about the summit? Oh my God, does she even remember? With a shake of his head he reminded himself they hadn’t exactly had any alone time with the entire family hanging around.

Her whisper broke through the fog of sleep. “Robbie?”

He bolted up. “What’s wrong?” The room was filled with a soft morning glow.

Still whispering, she said, “Nothing. I’m surprised to see you’re still here.”

He leaned over the bed. “Where did you think I’d be?”

A smile crept over her face. “Honestly, I was hoping you’d come to your senses and gone to the hotel.” She reached for his hand. “You’re running on empty.”

In a husky voice, he said, “I’m right where I want to be, with you.”

“I want to go home.” In an unusual display of vulnerability, she started to cry.

He interlaced his fingers with hers, unconsciously caressing them. “I don’t think that’s in the cards today. Remember, according to Grace and your doctor, there are several things you need to do first.”

“Yeah, I know.” She sniffed, her eyes downcast. “Be able to navigate on that scooter thing and get into the bathroom.”

“Kenz, give yourself a break,” he said softly. “It’s been less than twenty-four hours since you had surgery.”

A new face popped through the door. “Good morning, Kenzie. I’m Annette. your nurse for today.” She efficiently checked Kenzie’s vitals and nodded. “Breakfast will be in shortly and if you need something, ring.”

Kenzie waited until they were alone before asking, “Have you checked in with Cheryl?”

Robbie leaned back in the chair and folded his arms over his midsection. “She said to stop worrying, she has it under control.”

“When we get home, you need to go down and make sure everything is running smoothly.”

“You”—he pointed at her foot—“need to relax.”

She frowned and said, “Easy for you to say—you’re not the one with your leg dangling in the air.”

“Here we are,” Annette chirped as she came in carrying a breakfast tray. “I just saw your physical therapist and she’ll be in soon.”

Kenzie brightened. “One step closer to going home.”

Annette laughed. “Dr. Barton will be in to see you later.”

“Will I go home today?” Hope filled her face.

She laughed again. “More than likely tomorrow.”

Kenzie picked up the large plate cover. “Scrambled eggs and toast.” She licked her lips. “I’m starving.” She peeked under the lid on a shallow bowl. “Oatmeal.” Using a steady hand, she dipped the spoon in and held it out to Robbie. “Want some?”

He shook his head. “I’ll run down to the cafeteria after your parents get here.”

“Why don’t you head home today?” She scraped the bowl clean, then picked up a fork. “I’ve got a handle on this silverware thing.” With eggs midway to her lips, she said, “I think my parents might want to drive me home.
